The minimalist-minded Frama offers everything from a terrazzo T-shaped table to geometric brass lamps, but its St. Pauls Apothecary Collection, made in Copenhagen from natural ingredients and housed in Italian glass bottles, may be the design studio’s standout. There are a refillable softening hand wash and sepia-hued lotion scented with sandalwood, cedarwood, and ylang-ylang, as well as a handful of perfume oils, including a mysterious mélange of moss and grass from the Mediterranean Cypriot flora, layered with rose, lilac, and seaweed. Titled 1917, consider it a return to better basics.
In the corner of my apartment sits a vase of green hypericum berries and sunflowers. It resembles less “Vincent van Gogh painting” and more “attempted recreation of a Vincent van Gogh painting by a middle schooler”—there are a few awkward gaps, with some stalks slightly shorter than others. One flower is inexplicably wilted. Yet despite its imperfections, it brings me so much joy. In part because bouquets are scientifically proven to do so, but also because I went to the bodega, picked out miscellaneous flora, and arranged them myself. Just like sourdough starting and tie-dying, flower-arranging has emerged as a quarantine hobby. Florists and delivery companies have enthusiastically responded in kind: Lewis Miller, for example, offers “Flower Flash” boxes that include a link to a series of instructional videos. “You will learn how to clean and hydrate your roses and create an arrangement for your home, a centerpiece for a backyard picnic or a bedside arrangement, even a bud vase for your neighbor,” he writes on his website. Meanwhile, throughout the pandemic, Farmgirl Flowers has been uploading styling tutorials on their Youtube channel for every type of flora imaginable: peonies, roses, Gerber daisies, poppies, callas, and more.
But flower arranging isn’t just an activity to idly pass the time. As large scale events like weddings, graduations, and proms have been replaced with intimate gatherings, more and more people are using their own two hands to beautify them. “I’ve helped a coworker (via Zoom) style her wedding flowers in preparation for her Zoom wedding,” Kaylyn Hewitt, Bouq’s lead floral designer, tells Vogue. Bouqs recently featured a “make your own boutonniere” class on their IGTV, in service of grooms and supposed-to-be prom dates alike, as well as a Mother’s Day bouquet arranging session. “COVID has reminded me that flowers can be there when you can’t,” Hewitt says. So whether you’re looking to spruce up your home or adorn a special occasion, we asked Hewitt to share the best flower styling tips for the amateur arranger. Below, her suggestions. (And remember, says Hewitt: “flowers themselves do most of the work.”)
