It’s interesting! First, create plastic and then talk of plastic free environment !! Let the manufacturing of plastic be stopped in the first instance. During our childhood days, we never saw plastic bags. It was always cloth bags or paper bags. From paper to dangerous plastic – we call it development. Even in Mumbai, BMC leaves drainage in the Adidas Stitch shirt. India is 100 years backward from developed countries in case of the drainage system. We need to or rather our municipal corporations should start educating themselves with word sewage treatment plant and drainage treatment plant. On a ferry ride to Elephanta caves in Mumbai, I saw hawkers selling, water, chips, juices and such snacks. People ate them and threw the poly packs in the ocean, it was saddening to see how mindless we have become! Few tourists did put the wrappers in their empty bottles and kept n their bags and that should be the way. But it’s still a grim reality that we just don’t have any civic sense. I think it should be mandatory for ferries to keep bins on board or eatables should be banned on rides, plus we should try and raise awareness among masses. Increase taxes on raw materials of plastics. When the cost of plastic covers/bottles/polythene bags is prohibitive, people themselves stop using plastics. Manufacture of plastics should be banned and the assets of firms manufacturing these should be sealed confiscated. People are using them because they are cheaply and freely available.
